Ferdinand Magellan

About the Explorer

· Ferdinand Magellan was born in Northern Portugal 1480.

· His mother and father were Pedro Ruy de Magalhaes and Alda de Mezquita.

· He became the Majesty’s Faithful attendant at age thirteen.

· Ferdinand’s first time at sea was 1505 to Melaka and he was twenty-five years old.

· He was the first explorer to lead an expedition around the world, that expedition was the Victoria.

· Ferdinand died by a poison arrow in the foot by Sultan of Macton. (Philippines) April 17th 1521.

About the Voyage

· Ferdinand’s journey around the world began September of 1519 in Spain and would end in the Spice Islands.

· The goal of the trip was to find tons of spices to pay for the wars with Turkish Empire and to get a larger one.

· Ferdinand left with five ships those ships were the Santiago, San Antonio, Conception, Trinidad, and Victoria.

· The crew left with two hundred and forty men that day but only eighteen survived the trip. Ferdinand was not one of them.

· Almost three years later, September 6th, 1522 the eighteen survivors came back.

Other Interesting Facts

· On the journey Magellan named the Pacific Ocean, which means calm and peaceful.

· The dangerous Strait of Magellan is named after Ferdinand.

· Most of Magellan’s crew were prisoners and had to be let out of jail.

· Francisco Serrano, a great friend to Ferdinand, wrote letters so Magellan had to picture the voyage in his mind.

· Ferdinand Magellan made the voyage possible because he convinced the teenager king that some of the Spice Islands were in some of the undiscovered world.
