There once was a girl named Emma who lived with her father on a boat. In Emma’s bedroom there was a vase of flowers. Emma loved flowers but these were special to her because her father gave them to her. She loved her father and he loved her.

Her father once carried the Olympic torch. He never talked about it now because that was the day he lost his wife, Carolyn.

When the anniversary came of Carolyn’s death her father and Emma went to a fancy diner where they had flamingos running around outside.

They sat down and there was a blue and purple candle burning in the middle of their table. They sat at each end of a smaller size table that was a rectangle.

They talked about coffee and kites with everything else in-between. Emma talked about what happened at school and father talked about what happened out when he was fishing. He told Emma stories from school and what Carolyn did when she was in school. Carolyn used to tell Emma those stories all the time.

Then it came time to give Emma’s present to her father. They always shared gifts on this day. She had gotten him a bow tie. He liked his bow tie very much and said he would wear it next time they went out. The father said he had gotten Emma a present but they would have to go back to their house to see it. When they were driving back Emma wondered what it could be.

When they got back the father told Emma to close her eyes. Emma was waiting impatiently for what seemed like forever. When her father finally came back she heard something thump to the ground. It walked quietly over and sat at Emma’s feet. Her father told her to open her eyes. She looked and saw a full-grown black cat. It had long ears and dark black eyes. She picked it up and cuddled it. Emma muttered, "I think I will call you Midnight." From then on she knew her father and her would be fine from then on.
